There are different types of hip surgeries: total, partial replacement and resurfacing. Anterior total hip replacement surgery entails removing your damaged bone and cartilage in the joint and replacing each part with an implant.

The hip joint is a ball-and-socket joint and during a replacement at the ball end of the thigh bone (femoral head) is replaced with a metal stem and a ceramic ball that is secured to the top of the stem. The hip socket (acetabulum) is reinforced with a metal cup lined with a durable plastic (polyethylene).
